MEET THE EDITOR: North & South

Meet Kirsty Cameron, the new editor of North & South Magazine, New Zealand’s leading monthly current affairs magazine.

What is North & South magazine and why is it important to New Zealanders?

North & South is New Zealand’s magazine. We’ve been around for almost 40 years now, with a short break off the presses when Bauer pulled out of NZ and before our wonderful owners, Konstantin and Verena, bought the title and gave it new life. They bought it because they believed long-form journalism needed to be protected. That’s our heritage and our future: great journalism.

What can we expect in coming issues?

I’m not going to make any radical changes: we’re sticking to our USP of well-researched, well-written features that covers a broad range of topics of interest. And always, with New Zealand and New Zealanders at our heart. There are some design tweaks going on and some new names and regular features appearing too.

Has COVID changed your approach to the magazine or what readers want from it?

I don’t believe so. Our key feedback from subscribers who’ve read us for years is that they were hugely relieved that the quality of the magazine has been upheld over the change in ownership. That was very important to hear.

If North & South had a motto, what would it be?

We do say around the office that ‘endlessly curious’ would be a good motto. We don’t have an official one but I think that would work. Our stories, longer and shorter, always dig into the ‘why’ of the matter. So endlessly curious is good.

If you could be anyone famous for a day, who would it be and why?

That’s such a hard question to answer! Harry Styles, just for the sheer fun of being Harry Styles? I like his modern masculinity. Actually I would be Andreas Scholl, my favourite classical singer, so I could have the transcendent experience of having a beautiful voice. I love music but can’t sing, so that would be very satisfying.

Why subscribe to North and South?

So you never miss a single, excellent issue! You get it first, in time for a weekend of great reading about the people and issues that matter. Plus some pleasant, fun diversions too. What a great way to go into the new week.
